Time has a funny way of disappearing. Just exactly how that occurs is a mystery...kind of like the socks in the dryer. They went in, but they did NOT come out!
Life has a funny way of throwing things at us, but never throwing the one thing we need more of....TIME. House cleaning ends up being one of those tasks that gets pushed to the bottom of the list. “I will clean the kitchen later” or “The carpet isn’t THAT dirty...I can vacuum tomorrow” are common in every house. And who can blame you? Time with your family is precious and fleeting. Before you know it the kids are fully grown and off to college. Then how much will that clean house really matter?
Kids are like sponges. Everything we say and do is soaked up and helps build who they are. They learn from the actions of those around them and whose example do they value most? Their parents, of course. Wow, no pressure there right? Of course not. But that right there is the motivation needed to teach them the right and wrong way of doing things.
Cleaning doesn’t need to consume your life, nor should it. But, teaching your kids a few simple things can and WILL help them not only later in life....but right now. Whether it be in school, or clubs, or at their friends house. Every adult loves a kid who knows how to keep things tidy! A few important things every kid should know:
Pick up as you go. Seems like something that should just come naturally doesn't it? But kids are easily distracted by cooler, bigger, and more colorful things....and quickly! Teaching your child to put away things as they go, make the end result of being clean, simple. Not having to go back over and pick all your toys up or put away old crafting materials would make cleaning the table or vacuuming the floor a much less daunting task.
Bins. Bins. Bins. Bins are an amazing tool that should not be underestimated or underutilized. Have specific bins for specific things. Stuffed animals in one bin and blocks in another. Putting labels on those bins are even more helpful and can be a great way to teach reading!
Do not procrastinate. One of THE MOST common things for humans to do is put things off. We always seem to think that we will have time later...but something always comes up and whammo...the task you put off until later is either forgotten or pushed back again. Doing things in the moment is the best plan of action. But, if you absolutely must put something off, set a timer or some other kind of reminder and come back to that task once it goes off.
Ask for help. Teaching your kids that no one should have to do things in life alone is a valuable lesson. Being able to ask for help, delegate tasks, and know when to illicit professional advice or service is important. Power in numbers is a powerful tool!
